Skye College, Honeydew — water polo pool, in Honeydew, after completion
Water polo pool builders

Water polo pools, two metres deep from end to end.

It takes about a minute, and there's no obligation.

We build water polo pools to the dimensions the game calls for: 25 metres long and 2 metres deep all the way through. One of them, a school aquatic centre in Cape Town, is the biggest project Curtis Pools has taken on.
The pool in the photograph is at Skye College in Honeydew. It’s 25 metres by 16, and we finished it in December 2025, in time for the new school year.

A polo pool is a different animal from a swimming pool.

There’s no shallow end. The whole pool is 2 metres deep, and that means more digging, more steel, more gunite and a plant room sized for all that water. We’ve built them outdoors on a tight school campus, and indoors under a hall roof with eight heat pumps.
What we build

From a tight campus to a full aquatic centre

01

Outdoor polo pools

At Skye College in Honeydew we built a 25-metre by 16 pool, 2 metres deep, from scratch on a working school site with almost no access. It was finished in December 2025, ready for the new school year.
02

Indoor aquatic centres

A Cape Town school’s new centre at the foot of Table Mountain has a 25-metre by 30 pool, 2 metres deep. Base Projects were the main contractor, and it took about five months.
03

Heating and plant

The Cape Town centre runs eight heat pumps, four inside on ducted air and four outside. Keep them all indoors and they turn a plant room into a cold store.
04

Renovations

At Trinity House Randpark we re-marbelited the 25-metre by 16 polo pool. It was a straightforward job, about a month’s work in the winter break.

Case in point

The biggest pool we’ve built.

The Cape Town aquatic centre is a complete new indoor facility. The pool is 25 metres by 30 and 2 metres deep throughout, and where space was tight the filtration plant was fitted under the admin building. Russ Curtis calls it the single biggest project the company has taken on.

Questions people ask

How deep is a water polo pool?

Two metres, from end to end. The Skye College pool and the Cape Town aquatic centre are both 2 metres deep throughout. Randpark High School’s multi-level pool is a little different: a third of it is 1.2 metres deep and the rest is 2 metres, so it works for lessons as well as games.

Can a water polo pool be indoors?

Yes, it can. The Cape Town aquatic centre is fully indoors, with four heat pumps inside on ducted air and four outside. With an indoor pool, the plant room has to be designed for the humidity and the heat, and not only for the water.

How long does a water polo pool take?

The Cape Town centre took about five months. At Skye College the outdoor pool was timed around the main contractor’s programme and finished for the new school year.

How do we go about getting a quote?

Fill in the short form at the top of this page, or phone us on +27 11 794 4735. Because every pool is shaped to its own site, we’d rather come and look at the space and give you a proper figure than quote a number over the phone.
