A learn-to-swim pool is small, shallow and warm — and it works hardest in the months a main pool is empty. Ours are built as gunite shells like everything else, then enclosed, covered or heated so lessons carry on all year.

Enclosed pools
Curro Brackenfell: a 12.5 × 10 m enclosed learn-to-swim pool built in six weeks alongside the school’s builder — on beach sand that had to be over-excavated and compacted before the shell went in.

Crawford North Coast: a learn-to-swim pool under a solar cover for the school’s youngest swimmers.

Roofed, next to the main pool
Pinnacle College Raslouw: a roofed learn-to-swim pool built with the 25 m school pool, on dolomite with agricultural drains under both.

How big is a learn-to-swim pool?
Curro Brackenfell’s is 12.5 × 10 m. The size follows the number of children in a lesson and the space beside the main pool.
Can you build on sand?
Yes — at Curro Brackenfell the beach sand was over-excavated and compacted before the gunite shell went in. The ground is dealt with first, every time.
How long does one take?
Curro Brackenfell was built in six weeks, alongside the school’s builder.
