Water features are where the company’s gunite goes furthest from a rectangle.
A pool is one shape. A water garden is ponds, rills, bog beds, stepping stones and the pathways between them — all formed in sprayed concrete. Curtis Pools has built around 7 000 m² of it through a single office park, and refinished the lakes and fountains a resort is known for.

Four kinds of water feature

Reflection lakes and fountains
The plaza lake at Emperors Palace with its horse-sculpture fountains, the David statue fountain in the centre of the hotel, the VIP fountain — refinished in the resort’s turquoise, in public spaces that stayed open.

Natural ponds
Harrowdene Office Park: about 7 000 m² of natural ponds, bog beds and rock streams, built in phases over two to three years. Biofilters and planting do the cleaning; there is no chlorine.

Water gardens
A landscape scheme at Waterfall: an 18 × 4 m main pool, rock-edged ponds with stepping stones, a long fountain rill and a large round fish pond — the pathways between them formed in gunite too.

Rock and golf-course features
Leopard Creek: the gunite base for a large water feature on the golf course, with a rock-sculpting contractor shaping the artificial rock over it using Curtis Pools’ machines.

Harrowdene was built in sections through the mid-1990s, and its water gardens went in as each part of the office park was completed. Curtis Pools did the structural work on all of it. They are natural ponds rather than chlorinated pools: biofilters and bog beds were built in, and the planting does the polishing of the water.

Do you repair leaking water features?
Yes. The plaza lake at Emperors Palace had lost its coating in patches and was leaking around its edges; Curtis Pools refinished the top pond and sorted out the leaks, and it went back into service in January 2017.
Can a water feature be built without chlorine?
Yes — Harrowdene’s ponds and the Rochester office park features use biofilters, bog beds and planting to keep the water clean.
