Curtis Pools was spraying gunite on a mountain pass in 1982.
Gunite is a dry mix of sand and cement sprayed under pressure onto steel reinforcing, with the water added at the nozzle. It bonds to whatever it is sprayed against — a rock face, a scoured concrete channel — and cures as one continuous structure. That is why it builds good pools, and why it repairs things that are not pools.

Culvert and channel re-lining
Bombela’s M2 building on the Gautrain: scour-damaged stormwater culverts and channels re-lined with mesh-reinforced gunite over several weeks in early 2015.

Slope stabilisation
Waterval Boven: a mesh-and-gunite stabilisation of the cutting on the mountain pass, sprayed from scaffolding on the rock face in 1982 — the company’s earliest photographed project.

Structural shells for others
Gunite shells handed to another contractor to finish: the Wild Coast Sun lazy river, the Fire & Ice hotel pool three floors up, the Houghton penthouse pools.

What is gunite?
