Questions people ask
Can you build a pool on a sloping or awkward site?
Yes. Because the shell is sprayed concrete rather than a moulded shape, it can be raised, sunken, freeform or geometric, and built on a steep stand as readily as a flat one. Depending on the slope, retaining walls are built first — sometimes to an engineer's specification.
Do I have to choose from a range of pool shapes?
No. Curtis Pools does not work from a catalogue of pre-designed shells. The pool is drawn for the space you have, so the shape follows the site rather than the other way around.
What is marbelite, and why does it matter?
Marbelite is the smooth interior finish applied to a gunite shell — hard-wearing, and easy on the eye and on bare feet. Peter Curtis was instrumental in bringing it to the South African market, and the company still finishes its pools in it, in classic white or deeper water tones.
What can I choose besides the shape of the pool?
The interior colour, the paving and coping, timber decking, lighting and mosaic detail are all part of the design, along with the depth of the pool and how it sits in the garden.
